Ethnic Minorities

There are many financial assistance programs and resources benefiting special populations:

African American Students

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the nation's largest, oldest, most successful, and most comprehensive minority higher education assistance organization. UNCF provides operating funds and technology enhancement services for 39 member historically black colleges and universities, scholarships and internships for students at about 900 institutions, and faculty and administrative professional training.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities by State
HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: "...any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation."

Ron Brown Scholarships
The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national program benefiting academically-talented, highly motivated African-American high school seniors who have demonstrated financial need, social commitment and leadership potential.

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) was established in 1987 to carry on Justice Marshall's legacy of equal access to higher education by supporting exceptional merit scholars attending America's Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

National Society of Black Engineers Scholarships
NSBE provides various scholarships to our members through our NSBE and Corporate Scholarship Programs. Individual scholarships range in value from $500 to $7,500.

Black Student Fund
The Black Student Fund awards tuition grants, in conjunction with our Member Schools, to black children of modest financial means attending academically challenging institutions, grades pre-kindergarten through 12.

National Association of Black Journalists Scholarships
Annually, NABJ awards more than $30,000 in scholarships to deserving students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Each scholarship is worth up to $5,000.

American Indian/Alaska Native Students

Utah Navajo Trust Fund
UNTF is a state agency located in Blanding, Utah UNTF receives 37.5% of the 12.5% oil royalties from 16 leases northeast of Montezuma Creek (62.5% from this area and 100% from Aneth, Red Mesa, and Mexican Water goes to the Navajo Nation). UNTF administers these funds for use in common for Utah Navajo communities and families for various programs such as higher education financial aid, water lines, sewer lines, power lines, housing, renovation, additions, and other chapter projects.

American Indian College Fund
Through their scholarships for American Indian college students and support of America's tribally controlled colleges and universities, they give hope to, and create better lives for, generations of Native American students and their families and communities.

Tribal Colleges were created over the last 30 years in response to the higher education needs of American Indians, and generally serve geographically isolated populations that have no other means of accessing education beyond the high school level.

American Indian and Alaska Native Employee Association
Education is one of their main objectives. One aspect is to improve themselves and those who work with Tribal Lands. The other is that they offer scholarships to promising college students.

Association on American Indian Affairs
Since 1922, the Association on American Indian Affairs has been dedicated to helping Native people and their communities in meeting the challenges they face. One of these challenges is that of paying for a higher education. AAIA assists college students in meeting this challenge through their seven scholarship programs. AAIA offers two graduate fellowships and five undergraduate scholarships.

Asian American Students

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund
The Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is a new national organization devoted solely to the financial scholarship needs of Asian and Pacific Islander American students.

Asian American Journalists Association
Many AAJA chapters offer local scholarships or internship competitions. Students residing near or attending school in an area served by an AAJA chapter may be eligible to apply. Contact the Asian American Journalist Association's national office for information on availability of local scholarships.

US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce
The US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce's Asian American Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 to provide financial assistance to Asian American high school seniors who have demonstrated scholastic achievements, financial need and will pursue post-secondary education at an accredited educational institution in the United States.

Hispanic Students

Chicana/Latina Foundation
The purpose of the Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship Fund is to assist Latina students in completing their undergraduate and graduate college education. These scholarships are available on a competitive basis to continuing undergraduate and graduate female college students of Latino background.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund
Founded in 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is the leading nonprofit Latino litigation, advocacy and educational outreach institution in the United States. MALDEF's mission is to foster sound public policies, laws and programs to safeguard the civil rights of the 45 million Latinos living in the United States and to empower the Latino community to fully participate in our society.

Congressional Hispanic Scholarships
Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships of $1,000; $2,500 and $5,000. Undergraduate Students Receive DELL Notebook Computer and Microsoft Package. This premier scholarship opportunity is afforded to Latino students who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who plan to continue contributing in the future.

Scholarships for Hispanics
Scholarships for Hispanics has more than 1,000 sources of financial aid more easily accessible to Hispanic students around the country and world. The site includes application guidelines, an alumni section, and a database of scholarships fully searchable by a variety of categories, including state, college, and field of interest.

State Farm Insurance Hispanic Scholarships
State Farm Companies Foundation has assisted Hispanic college students through its relationship with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund since 1990. Each year, we provide $2,500 scholarships to 20 Hispanic college students who are pursing a teaching career.

Hispanic College Fund Institute
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute (HSF Institute) was created in 2001 to extend the impact of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) on the achievement of Latinos in the United States. Working with HSF on the goal of doubling the rate of Hispanic college graduates by the year 2010, the primary focus of HSF Institute is to engage the public sector in support of Latino higher education achievement.
